Berlin

It's been 20 years now since the Berlin Wall came down – and Berliners marked the anniversary with a massive street theatre performance called "The Berlin Reunion". The Big Picture was there.

I recently revisited the (now somewhat dated) French film Diva... and while the 80s clothes, the 80s acting and the 80s dialogue ("C'est les flics!") don't hold up, the signature tune, the timeless, achingly beautiful Ebben? Ne Andrò Lontana from La Wally certainly does.

Spamalot

Monty Python alumnus Eric Idle has a great story up on the Los Angeles Times magazine site, about the time he got nominated (and nominated) (and nominated) for the 2005 Tony Awards.

As the story goes – and you really have to read it yourself – Idle sat through the entire show, watching the other nominees winning every category while he won diddly squat. I guess if your show is called Spamalot, then you can't expect too much.

Committie

I went to watch Allan Committie's one-man comedy show at the Theatre On The Bay on Saturday night, and I'm still giggling quietly to myself about it.

Tony!

Hollywood has the Oscars, and Broadway has the Tonys. And this year's American theatre awards ceremony was broadcast on American TV, with Doogie Howser himself doing the MC duties. The best part was the surprise closing number (hey, every Broadway show's gotta have one), where Doogie (Neil Patrick Harris) sang about the night's winners.
